Sports

Santa Teresita School participates in the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) athletic program. This afterschool program is open to students in fourth through eighth grades. Boys may participate in flag football, basketball and volleyball. Girls may participate in volleyball, basketball and softball. The school will sponsor sports if a sufficient number of students show interest and meet team requirements, and if volunteers are available to serve as team coaches.

MEET THE SAINT SEBASTIAN SPORTS PROJECT

Supporting Catholic Schools Through Sports

WHO ARE WE?

The Saint Sebastian Sports Project is non-profit, founded in 2009 that supports the sports programs at 80 Catholic schools in the LA Archdiocese to give every school child in the Los Angeles Archdiocese the chance to learn the skills, experience the growth, and share in the joy of participating in a school sports team.

 WHAT DO WE DO?

  • Help fund equipment, uniforms and team fees for 80 Catholic schools in the Archdiocese
  • Host clinics to make sure kids are receiving quality coaching
  • Hold tournaments to give teams that don’t normally qualify for post-season play the thrill of competing in a championship
  • Score tickets to UCLA, USC games and other local sporting events
  • Hold a Leadership Academy for outstanding high school bound 8th graders

WHO ARE OUR PARTNERS?

We have partnered with a number of like-minded organizations to expand our reach and deepen our impact.

  • Fit Kids- provides a comprehensive physical education curriculum to every SSSP school
  • The Science of Sport—hosts an annual field day to teach STEM subjects through sports
  • LA84- provides coaching stipends for our schools
  • Smart & Final—offers annual grants for uniforms and equipment

WHAT ARE THE RESULTS?

Numerous studies have established the positive effects of exercise among children and teens. SSSP schools report higher attendance rates for students who play sports. Student athletes also achieve higher grades and tend to go on to play sports in high school. Pope Francis has noted the importance of sports, pointing out that sport is a tool that can be used for problem solving and to “achieve a profound transformation of our society.”
